How to Survive a Possible Lockdown?

The year 2020 has proven to be rather challenging; only a few months ago, when we were writing down our New Year resolution, no one could have imagined that we will be discussing topics like a pandemic. Coronavirus has taken the world by surprise and has sent everyone into a lockdown. Lockdown also has gone through a few stages. Not all countries are under curfew, but their activities have been restricted. For the next few days or even weeks, we will be spending a lot of time indoors with our friends and families, and that is why we must be prepared for all situations.

We often hear people saying that they have a list of things they would like to do when they have the time, probably this is that time. In this article, we will discuss how to survive a possible lockdown and enjoy it.

Get Your Essentials

When we talk about the essentials, it is not just the medical essentials like masks, sanitizers, etc. but eatables too like wheat, rice, sugar, tea, pulses, and many similar things. If you have children, milk and some granola bars would also be easy picks. When children get bored, they either want something to play with or something to eat, get some extra baking supplies too. Baking is an activity that can distract children and will get them spending hours in the kitchen. Get at least a month’s groceries so that you don’t have to walk out of your house unnecessarily.

Freeze some Essentials

You can easily stock up on the dried goods, but you can also get some other essentials like butter, cheese, fruits, lemongrass, garlic, etc. Dry food tends to get stale easier, but if you can freeze them, they will go a long way. Similarly, you can freeze tomatoes, fried onions, and other things that you can use in your dishes.

Return to Your Home

If you are in another country or are currently working away from home, this is the time to take a flight back home. Many countries right now have travel restrictions, but they are running special flights to get their residents back home. Students are the worst hit by this pandemic. Hundreds and thousands of children each year travel to other countries to get the right education if you are one of them; it is time to get back home. If you are still in a foreign land, get your entire luggage together and keep extra cash with yourself, as you might be stuck there for a longer period.

Emergency Cash

A lot of people live from hand to mouth, they do not have a lot of savings for tough times, but this is the time you must consider keeping some extra cash for an emergency. Preparing financially in an economic crisis and lockdown is essential. Small businesses and medium industry will be the worst hit, and keeping some financial cushion is important.

Build Routines

Spending a day at home and spending a month at home are two completely different scenarios. When children have summer vacations, parents usually make a time table that includes their daily routines, from the time they get up in the morning to do activities until they go back to bed at night. Similarly, everyone needs to make a routine in the time of a lockdown. The activities may involve learning a new skill, taking online classes, or anything that may be on your agenda for the day.

Get Ready to Spend Time with Children

If you don’t have children, just stick to your hobbies, but if you do have children, this time could really test you. One piece of advice that we would like to offer is to get sunlight with your kids. If you can leave the building to play in a common space, do it. If you have a park nearby, go there, if you have a balcony, sit there. It is important to break the monotonous routine if you have children. Keep the children away from screens as much as possible. Technology can be very tempting but try to resist it until you have no other option. Push your children to indulge in physical activity, play a game of badminton in your backyard, or sit down to play a game of monopoly. Stock up on board games, this could help when you are in a lockdown.

Exercise

We cannot emphasize this enough; exercise is not only important for the body but also for the mind. Being in a lockdown can be depressing and also cause anxiety, but exercising will help you get rid of both. Follow a physical fitness expert or a yoga instructor on social media, take 30 minutes or an hour each day to meditate and exercise. You may also ask your children or your partner to join in on your sessions. This will give you the peace of mind that has been missing.

Rationing

Rationing is a term that means allowing each person to have a certain amount of commodity. When you are under a lockdown or a curfew, things are scarce, whether it is junk food or organic food, and that is why rationing will come in handy. If you have bought groceries for the month, divide it into four equal quarters and store them so that you do not use them in excess.

Learn a New Skill

You might have a list of things that you wanted to do if you had the time, well now you have all the time in the world. Start to learn something new, take stitching classes online, or start learning how to make candles at home, and you never know before the lockdown is over, you might be an entrepreneur. This might also be a good time to spend some time on an old hobby that you had no time to continue.

Decorate

If you have absolutely nothing to do, then start decorating your place. You can take down the Christmas decoration now and start decorating for summers. Maybe put a fresh coat of paint in the living room, this will freshen up the entire house. You don’t have to put in a lot of money; just a few simple changes here and there can spruce up the place.

This time can be very challenging, especially for people who are not financially stable. Anyone who is forced to stay at home will find it difficult to adapt to the new routine, but you can always make it fun and enjoy your time at home. Today, we are so absorbed in our lives that we often tend to forget about the other people living under the same roof. This is the right time to appreciate the things that we have forever taken for granted. Video call your family and friends once a day, and you will see how you will feel refreshed and motivated. This is history being made, a decade from now we will be telling our children about this time and another 30 years along the line, we might be narrating these stories to our grandchildren. Make the most of the time that you have and prepare well for the lockdown.
